Shanghai is set to establish two overseas cargo stations in Ethiopia and Mexico. The initiative, led by Shanghai Airport, aims to support China’s dual circulation strategy and strengthen Shanghai’s role as a high-quality international air cargo hub.

According to the China Daily, the new cargo stations will be located at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in Ethiopia and Mexico City International Airport (AICM). The development stems from strategic collaboration agreements signed between Shanghai Pudong International Airport Cargo Terminal (PACTL) and Ethiopian Airlines Group and Lufthansa Cargo.

The agreements outline a broad framework of cooperation, including business development, market expansion, technological exchange, operational efficiency, and brand promotion. These partnerships are poised to enhance global supply chain connectivity and offer robust logistical support to Shanghai’s growing trade ambitions.

The Ethiopian cargo station will span 40,000m² and is projected to manage over 600,000t of cargo annually. Meanwhile, the 10,000m² station in Mexico is expected to process over 100,000t of cargo each year once operational.

By deepening ties with major international aviation players, Shanghai Airport seeks to accelerate the city’s transformation into a comprehensive global aviation and logistics hub. The new facilities are not only strategic for enhancing cargo throughput but also serve as key infrastructure for advancing China’s dual circulation development model, where domestic and international markets reinforce one another.
